This building, on the grounds of the University of Central America (UCA), was the residence of the 6 Jesuit priests who were murdered by the Salvadoran army. The priests were brought into this courtyard in the middle of the night of November 16, 1989, and each shot in the head with exploding bullets. Their brains were seen as a threat to the government. The gardener's wife and daughter, who had come to the compound to spend the night for what they thought would be a safe place were also murdered, so that no witnesses would be left behind. The rose garden was planted by the gardener as a memorial to the victims, a red rose for each priest, and a white one for each for his wife and his daughter.

The names of the murdered priests are memorialized on a plaque in the rose garden.

The priests' bodies are entombed in the chapel (nave shown immediately below) built to commemorate Monsenor Romero.
